Novel gene or DNA fragment mapping on banded chromosomes (human, mouse, and rat)
Cross species mapping utilizing alternate species cDNA probes. This can be done, for example, by mapping a human locus using mouse, rat, other mammalian and even fly cDNA.
Evaluate syntenic relationships between human, mouse, rat and other species
Confirm EST information
Confirm mapping data generated from a radiation hybrids panel
Deletion/amplification studies of a novel gene in tumor cell lines
Figure 1: Gene Mapping on Human Chromosomes
FISH detection on DAPI banded human chromosomes. FISH mapping on
banded chromosomes is effective for chromosome
identification and for the precise mapping. Since
condensation along a chromosome is not consistent throughout the various stages of
metaphase, it is not accurate to map genes by measuring the position
on non-banded chromosomes (such as when co-hybridization with known
probes is used to identify the chromosomes).
